Sinus Infections

The Woodlands Sinus Infection | Veda Health | Direct Primary Care | The Woodlands | Texas

Veda Health is pleased to offer treatment options for sinus infections. A sinus infection is an inflammation of the paranasal sinuses, the cavities within the bones that surround the nose. When the drainage system becomes blocked, your head hurts, you feel facial pressure or pain around the forehead, eyes, nose and cheeks, and thick mucus clogs your nose. You may have a fever, sore throat, a cough, or a postnasal drip. Sinus infections are often caused by a cold or allergies. Your physician will diagnose a sinus infection by looking inside your nasal cavity, and check for sinus pressure or tenderness by gently touching or feeling your face. Additional testing to confirm a diagnosis may be ordered. Your doctor may suggest treatment to help relieve your sinusitis symptoms, including a saline nasal spray or nasal corticosteroid.

Flu

The Woodlands Flu | Veda Health | Direct Primary Care | The Woodlands | Texas

The flu is a respiratory infection caused by a virus. Most people who get the flu feel sick for a week or two and recover. For others however, the flu leads to more serious lung infections or to worsening of underlying conditions such as emphysema or heart failure. Veda Health always recommends prevention over treatment. In order to prevent the flu, we recommend washing hands regularly, keeping hands away from your face, getting your flu shot, and living a healthy life. If you have already contracted the flu, we recommend rest, lots of fluids, eating lightly, staying home, and OTC medicine, with an added benefit of vitamin C. There are some prescription medications that can help, though usually only if started within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms. If you have a severe infection (are seriously ill), or you are at a higher risk of complications, your doctor may prescribe an antiviral drug to treat the flu.

Strep

The Woodlands Strep Throat | Veda Health | Direct Primary Care | The Woodlands | Texas

Veda Health is pleased to be able to provide treatment for Strep throat. Strep throat is a highly contagious bacterial infection in your throat and tonsils. If left untreated, it can cause serious complications such as rheumatic fever. Symptoms develop quickly, and include pain when swallowing, fever, tender and swollen lymph nodes in the neck, red or swollen tonsils, tiny red bumps on the roof of the mouth, headaches, body aches, and nausea or vomiting. Strep is diagnosed during a physical exam where your throat and tonsils are checked. It is confirmed by a rapid antigen test, or a throat swab culture. Treatments include oral antibiotics, which can lessen the duration and severity of the condition if started early, pain relievers, warm hydrating fluids and throat lozenges. After 24 hours of taking antibiotics, your strep throat is no longer contagious even if you still have symptoms.

Ear Infections

The Woodlands Ear Infections | Veda Health | Direct Primary Care | The Woodlands | Texas

Your primary care physician at Veda Health is here to help you manage your ear infection. Ear infections are an inflammation and/or fluid buildup in the tubes that connect your throat to your ear drums. An ear infection often starts with a cold or throat infection and can affect the middle ear. It can be quite painful. In adults, symptoms include ear pain, fluid drainage from ears, muffled or difficult hearing, nausea, full feeling in ear, and/or stabbing pain with warm discharge from the ear. In children, symptoms include poor sleep, fussiness, crying at night after lying down, decreased appetite, fever, and ear tugging. Most ear infections clear up on their own and require no medical intervention. However, if the symptoms do not improve within 3 days, and/or you develop a fever, this could indicate a more serious infection. Antibiotics are sometimes needed to treat severe cases, or cases that last longer than 2-3 days.

Viral Illnesses

The Woodlands Viral Illness | Veda Health | Direct Primary Care | The Woodlands | Texas

You should consult your Veda Health doctor if you think you have a viral infection, with the exception of the common cold, which is usually not life threatening. While it is often difficult to determine whether an illness is bacterial or viral, your doctor may be able to determine the cause by listening to your medical history and doing a physical exam. Your doctor can also order blood or urine tests to help confirm a diagnosis, or a ‘culture test’ of tissue to identify bacteria or viruses. For most viral infections, treatments can only help with symptoms while you wait for your immune system to fight off the virus. Antibiotics do not work for viral infections.
